CURCUMIN

Curcumin is a well-known dietary polyphenol derived from the rhizomes of turmeric, an Indian spice. The anticancer effect of curcumin has been demonstrated in many cell and animal studies, and recent research has shown that curcumin can target cancer stem cells (CSCs). CSCs are proposed to be responsible for initiating and maintaining cancer, and contribute to recurrence and drug resistance. A number of studies have suggested that curcumin has the potential to target CSCs through regulation of CSC self-renewal pathways. The potential impact of curcumin, alone or in combination with other anticancer agents on CSCs was evaluated as well. Furthermore, the safety and tolerability of curcumin have been well-established by numerous clinical studies. Importantly, the low bioavailability of curcumin has been dramatically improved through the use of structural analogues or special formulations. More clinical trials are underway to investigate the efficacy of this promising agent in cancer chemoprevention and therapy. In conclusion, curcumin could be a very promising adjunct to traditional cancer treatments.

MSG, EXTREMELY TOXIC?

Found everywhere as an additive in your food, new research has uncovered that this "flavor enhancer" is extremely toxic, causing a battery of adverse health effects within normal dietary ranges.

A new study published in the Journal of Headache Pain reveals that a single intake of monosodium glutamate (MSG) produces headache in the majority of healthy subjects tested.[i]

The researchers conducted a double-blinded, placebo-controlled, crossover study to examine the effect of repeated MSG intake.

"Fourteen healthy subjects participated in 5 daily sessions for one week of MSG intake (150 mg/kg) or placebo (24 mg/kg NaCl) (randomized, double-blinded). Spontaneous pain, pressure pain thresholds and tolerance levels for the masseter and temporalis muscles, side effects, and blood pressure were evaluated before and 15, 30, and 50 min after MSG intake. Whole saliva samples were taken before and 30 min after MSG intake to assess glutamate concentrations."

The results were as follows:

Headache occurred in 8/14 subjects during MSG and 2/14 during placebo.

Salivary glutamate concentrations on Day 5 were elevated significantly (P < 0.05).

Pressure pain thresholds in masseter muscle were reduced (i.e. pain increased) by MSG on Day 2 and 5 (P < 0.05).

Blood pressure was significantly elevated after MSG (P < 0.040).

This study has profound implications, insofar as the majority of packaged and prepared foods on the market today have either monosodium glutamate added, or a glutamate rich 'food concentrate' intended to model its flavor-enhancing effects, e.g. "hydrolyzed soy protein," "yeast extract," etc. It is therefore nearly impossible to avoid it, unless you are eating a whole food based diet, or one where you are preparing your foods from scratch. MSG avoidance should be a vital part of your strategy to improve your health through diet.

NEW LIFESTYLE DISEASE

Yes, it’s new and it’s called ‘Pre-diabetes”.

What, according to the experts, is pre-diabetes?

“Pre-diabetes means that your blood sugar level is higher than normal (OK), but it's not yet high enough to be classified as type 2 diabetes. Without intervention, pre-diabetes is likely to become type 2 diabetes in 10 years or less.”

So, if we can get pre-diabetes then we can also get pre-cancer, pre-arthritis, pre-whatever disease we as humans can get. Ever heard of pre-pregnant? Any healthy female who is sexually active can thus be classified as pre-pregnant. Who knows what you will suffer from in 5-10 years time? Every person on earth who does not look after his or her body will definitely develop some or other disease and in some cases life threatening.

There is no such thing as pre-diabetes. You are either a diabetic or not. Sure, the warning signs can be there, but don’t term them as ‘pre-diabetes.’

If someone diagnoses you with ‘pre-diabetes’ this may be an opportunity and a wake up call for you to improve your health. Admit it. Your diet sucks. You spend too much time in front of the TV. Exercise is something you once did. You have a very good chance of actually becoming a Type 2 diabetic and will then have to control your diabetes with diet, exercise and in certain cases oral medication. With healthy lifestyle changes — such as eating healthy foods (which you will have to when you have diabetes), including physical activity in your daily routine (very important for someone who has diabetes) and maintaining a healthy weight (which comes naturally with your controlled diet and exercise regime) — you may be able to bring your blood sugar level back to normal limits.

So forget about pre-diabetes and start living a healthier more active lifestyle. Prevention is better than cure!!
