DON’T COMPROMISE YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM

Your immune system fights off invaders and sickness using a two-pronged defense:

• Th1 lymphocytes, white blood cells that direct an assault on infected cells
• Th2 lymphocytes, white blood cells that produce antibodies that try to block dangerous microbes from invading your cells (Th2 lymphocytes are also the cells that drive allergic responses to foreign organisms)

If a child is raised in an environment doused in antibacterial soaps and cleansers, given antibiotics that kill off all of the good and bad bacteria in their gut, and kept away from the natural dirt, germs, viruses and other grime of childhood, they are not able to build up resistance to disease, and they become vulnerable to illnesses, disease and other health problems later in life.

Using antibacterial soaps interferes with the function of the Th1 and Th2 lymphocytes. So get rid of all those antibacterial products and use normal soap and water. Let your immune system recover, grow stronger and do the job it was designed to do.

Consume Friendly Bacteria. Beneficial microorganisms colonize our intestinal, lower urinary and upper respiratory tracts. They outcompete bad “bugs” and enhance immune function. You can consume such bacteria in the form of live-cultured products such as yogurt, sauerkraut and kimchi. Probiotic supplements, available at natural food stores, may reduce the risk of antibiotic-induced diarrhea, viral diarrhea, vaginitis and respiratory infections.

Expose Yourself. Vitamin D plays a number of roles in promoting normal immune function. Vitamin D deficiency correlates with asthma, cancer, several autoimmune diseases (e.g., multiple sclerosis), and susceptibility to infection (including viral respiratory infections). One study linked deficiency to a greater likelihood of carrying MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) in the nose.

6) Benefits of Exercise

Exercise impacts every aspect of our health and the immune system is no exception. Moderate exercise is all we need, but we need it everyday. If you’re looking for the absolute best exercise to boost your immune system, check out the mini trampoline. The light bouncing (where your feet don’t even leave the mat) is the most efficient way to flush your lymphatic system. Just two minutes of this “health” bouncing is enough to flush toxins and waste products out of your body. When the lymphatic system is flushed, new white cells come rushing in - energized and ready to stand guard.

Eating too many sweeteners and processed foods make us deficient in many nutrients. We can get the nutrition we need by eating whole, organic foods, grass-fed beef, and pastured meats. HOW DO WE JUDGE THE QUALITY AND POTENCY OF HERBAL PRODUCTS?

When it comes to quality, purity and potency of herbal adaptogens and other herbs, companies who make herbal products must be meticulous to guarantee that their products are of the highest quality. Herbs need to be handled properly and processed correctly to create potent and effective herbal preparations that will provide health benefits.
Unfortunately you can’t judge the potency of herbal products just by looking at them or tasting them but there are ways to evaluate the practices of a company and the quality of the products they produce.
The manufacturer should:
·       Follow good manufacturing practices
·       Be able to provide a lot-specific certificate of analysis for every ingredient
·       Directly source and keep records of all herbal ingredients
·       Submit products to a qualified lab for validation
·       Make the results available for review.

SHOULD WE LOOK FOR PRODUCTS THAT CONTAIN WILD HERBS ONLY?

Cultivation is not an issue with some herbs, some herbs still keep their active compounds and can be farmed with great success but for other plants you lose what makes them special as soon as they are farmed.
Ginseng does not farm well. Ginseng's active compounds are called ginsenosides, and if seeded in its natural environment, it is possible to produce a good ginseng plant rich in ginsenosides. However, most commercial ginseng does not contain ginsenosides, in fact, most commercial ginseng products contain little or no ginsenosides. In studies of the purity and potency of ginseng products, researchers analysed 25 commercial ginseng preparations found in a health food store, the actual concentration of active ingredients differed significantly from the amounts listed on the labels.

WHERE DO THE HERBS IN COMMERCIAL PRODUCTS COME FROM?

In the wild, medicinal plants grow in particular soil and climate with a host of environmental factors to which they must adapt. Cold, heat, drought, insects and viruses all these environmental factors put stress on the plant, the plant has to produce many important secondary compounds that enable it to adapt, thrive and survive in its natural environment. The secondary compounds play a host of general and protective roles including enhancing the plants ability to produce antioxidants, absorb UV light and enable the plant to produce anti-proliferative agents. They may also defend the plant against bacteria, fungi and viruses. It’s this evolutionary development of plants that are of great benefit o us. Ancient people knew that, in essence, the plant transfers its healing and protective benefits to us. And now science is verifying that when we ingest plants and plant extracts, our ability to withstand stressors is enhanced. So where do the herbs in commercial products come from?

The majority of medicinal herbs today are farmed like vegetables, and although they might look the same as wild-grown herbs, they may be missing the active compound that makes them beneficial to our health.

HAS THE QUALITY OF COMMERCIAL HERBS BEING SACRIFICED?

Reishi

Reishi, the king of medicinal mushrooms, available for commercial purchase but are all reishi extracts created equally? Reishi is rich in triterpenes called ganoderic acids (over a hundred) and polysaccharides. Triterpenes is a class of compound that gives the herb its bitter taste; it is believed to have great health benefits such as lipid-lowering, cancer suppressing and antioxidant effects. Polysaccharides are the main immune enhancing compounds.

In a recent study, 11 commercial reishi extract products where for bio-active compounds, including polysaccharides and triterpenes. None of them contained even half the level of triterpenes that correlate with the mushroom extract used in clinical trials(less than 4% triterpenes), only a few contained sufficient polysaccharides (less than 10% polysaccharides).

CAN YOU TRUST HERBAL PRODUCTS?

It wasn't too long ago that if you wanted herbs, you pretty much had to grow them yourself, but today herbs and herbal formulas can be self-prescribed.
It’s great that people are recognizing the healing potential of medicinal plants. The demand for herbal medicine is growing as herbal alternatives to over the counter products are becoming more popular. The increasing popularity of herbal medicines has lead to the stores being flooded with herbal products. So how do you know what products to buy?
Advertisements, snippets in magazines, the internet, or maybe a friend tells you about what a herb might offer, the truth is that much of the information the public receives about herbs is based on casual observation rather than scientific analysis. It’s easy enough to go to your local pharmacy to buy your herbal remedy, but are your choices make for the right reason? Buying a product because you enjoyed the advertisement, like the packaging or basing your decision on price can result in a poor outcome. You should be basing your purchase on quality.
Ask yourself this:
·       Can I trust the company and the products they are producing?
·       Where did they source their raw materials?
·       What is the quality of the raw materials they are using?
·       Does the product contain an important active ingredient?
·       How are these ingredients measured?
·       What is the concentration of the active ingredient?
·       Does the product contain chemical, metal compounds or unwanted fillers and binders?
·       Where were the herbs cultivated and who cultivated them?
·       What processes where used to make them into medicine?
·       Are the preparations stable or are they prone to oxidation and can they become rancid?

ST JOHN'S WORT

For centuries, the flowering plant St. John's wort was used as a health remedy in Europe. Today, St. John's wort is best-known as a treatment for depression.
Multiple studies have found St. John's wort helpful for depression. In fact, a few showed that St. John's wort was as effective as some prescription antidepressants  in treating  milder forms of depression.
St. John's wort has also been studied in the treatment of other mood disorders, such as severe depression, anxiety disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), and seasonal affective disorder (SAD.) It's also been used for insomnia, PMS, menopausal symptoms, and eczema.

GINSENG

Different varieties of ginseng root have been used as treatments in Asia and North America for centuries. Ginseng is one of the most popular herbal medicines in the world.
Ginseng has traditionally been used for a number of medical conditions. There are two main types of ginseng: Asian or Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng) and American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius). Studies have found that the different types have different benefits. In traditional Chinese medicine, American ginseng is considered less stimulating than the Asian variety.
Some studies have found that ginseng may boost the immune system. There is some evidence that one particular type of American ginseng extract might decrease the number and severity of colds in adults. Several studies in people have also shown that ginseng may lower blood sugar levels. Ginseng has also been studied as a way to improve mood and boost endurance as well as treat cancer, heart disease, fatigue, erectile dysfunction, hepatitis C, high blood pressure, menopausal symptoms, and other conditions.

GINKGO BILOBA

For thousands of years, leaves from the Ginkgo Biloba tree have been a common treatment in Chinese medicine. Ginkgo improves blood flow to the brain and acts as an antioxidant. These effects may translate into some benefits for certain medical problems, but the results have been mixed.
Some studies have found that in healthy people, ginkgo might modestly boost memory and cognitive speed. Other studies have not found a benefit.
There's good evidence that ginkgo might ease leg pain caused by clogged arteries. It might also help with some other circulation problems. In addition, ginkgo may relieve PMS symptoms, like breast tenderness and mood changes.

ECHINACEA

Echinacea has been long used to fight colds and infections, and many experts recommend its use.
Many people take echinacea in the hopes that it will boost immunity. So far, evidence suggests that echinacea does not prevent the common cold. But it might help as a treatment. Some studies, many of them small, have found that taking echinacea may reduce the length of a cold and the severity of its symptoms.
It’s important to note that there are different species of echinacea, such as Echinacea purpurea, Echinacea pallida, and Echinacea angustifolia. Some of the conflicting findings may result from researchers testing different varieties. The strongest evidence for echinacea as a cold treatment comes from studies of Echinacea purpurea. Studies of Echinacea angustifolia and any echinacea root have had weaker results. Echinacea may not work as well in children and young adults as it does in older adults.
When taken along with an anti-fungal cream, oral echinacea may help prevent recurrent vaginal yeast infections. While some studies suggest that echinacea may slightly reduce flu symptoms, the evidence isn't clear.

CHAMOMILE

Chamomile has been used as a traditional medicine for thousands of years to calm anxiety and settle stomachs.
Chamomile is considered a safe plant and has been used in many cultures for stomach ailments and as a mild sedative. Some studies, primarily using combinations of chamomile with other plants, show it may have health benefits.  Chamomile has been shown to ease upset stomach, heartburn, nausea, and vomiting.
A mouth rinse with chamomile might relieve mouth sores caused by cancer treatments. Some research suggests that chamomile could help with other conditions, like diarrhea in children, hemorrhoids, anxiety, and insomnia. When used on the skin, chamomile might help with skin irritation and wound healing. Some research has documented that it may be as effective as hydrocortisone cream for eczema.
