WHAT IS HERBAL MEDICINE?

Herbal Medicine is the oldest and still most widely used system of medicine in the world. It is a medicine made from plants and plant extracts. Plants have been used for medical purposes for thousands of years; in fact, the use of plants as medicines predates written human history.

The use of herbs and spices in cuisine developed in part as a response to the threat of food-borne pathogens. Studies show that in tropical climates where pathogens are the most abundant, recipes are the most highly spiced. Further, the spices with the most potent antimicrobial activity tend to be selected. In all cultures vegetables are spiced less than meat, presumably because they are more resistant to spoilage.

Many people dismiss herbal medicines and believe solely in modern medicine not knowing that more than a ¼ of all drugs used today contain active ingredients derived from plants used for thousands of years by our ancestors.
